Skardu is a year-round destination, but the experience changes dramatically from one season to the next — from pink apricot blossoms in spring to snow-blanketed valleys in winter. The short answer: the best time to visit Skardu is from May to October, with June to September being peak season. This month-by-month guide breaks down exactly what to expect so you can plan the perfect trip.
The quick answer
For warm days, open roads and full access to attractions like Marsur Rock and the Deosai Plateau, aim for June to September. For blossoms and fewer crowds, come in April to May or October. Winter is stunning but cold, with many high routes closed.
Spring in Skardu (April to May)
Spring is one of the most beautiful times to visit Skardu. As the snow melts, the valleys of Baltistan burst into pink and white apricot, cherry and apple blossoms, usually peaking in early-to-mid April. Days are mild and pleasant, though the highest passes and Deosai are still under snow. By May the main roads and most viewpoints are open and the trekking season begins.
Summer in Skardu (June to September)
Summer is peak season and the best all-round time to visit. Days are warm and sunny, evenings are cool, and virtually everything is accessible — including the Deosai Plateau, which usually opens around late June. This is the prime window for trekking, base-camp expeditions and hiking Marsur Rock, and the long daylight hours are ideal for photography. It is also the busiest and priciest period, so book flights and accommodation well ahead.
Autumn in Skardu (October to November)
Autumn brings crisp air, golden poplar and willow foliage, and some of the clearest mountain views of the year. October is still comfortable for hiking and sightseeing with far fewer crowds, making it a favourite among photographers. By November temperatures drop sharply and the first snows begin to close the higher routes.
Winter in Skardu (December to March)
Winter transforms Skardu into a quiet, snow-covered wonderland. It is the coldest and least-visited season, with temperatures often well below freezing and Deosai and many high roads closed. Flights can be disrupted by weather, but for travellers chasing solitude, dramatic snowscapes and the lowest prices, it has a stark beauty all its own.
