1. Marsur Rock (Pakistan’s Trolltunga)
Nicknamed Pakistan’s Trolltunga, Marsur Rock is a dramatic knife-edge ledge high above Hussainabad near Skardu, with a jaw-dropping panorama of the Indus valley and the Karakoram. 2. Shangrila Resort and Lower Kachura Lake
Often called Heaven on Earth, Shangrila Resort sits on the shore of Lower Kachura Lake, famous for its red-roofed pagoda restaurant and mirror-still waters. It is one of Skardu’s most photographed spots and an easy, family-friendly outing about 20 km from the city.
3. Upper Kachura Lake
A short walk beyond Shangrila, Upper Kachura Lake is a deep, crystal-clear turquoise lake ringed by orchards and mountains. You can hire a boat, try trout fishing, or simply relax by the calm water.
4. Sarfaranga Cold Desert
One of the highest deserts in the world, the Sarfaranga Cold Desert stretches along the Indus with golden dunes set against snow-capped peaks. It hosts the annual Skardu desert rally and offers jeep rides, quad biking and unforgettable sunsets.
5. Katpana Cold Desert
Close to Skardu airport, the Katpana Cold Desert is another world-famous high-altitude desert, with silvery dunes that shimmer under the sun and glow in the moonlight. Camel rides and camping under the stars are popular here.
6. Deosai National Park
Known as the Land of Giants, Deosai is a vast high-altitude plateau above 4,000 metres, carpeted with wildflowers in summer and home to the rare Himalayan brown bear. Open roughly from June to September, it is one of the most spectacular drives in Pakistan.
7. Shigar Valley and Fort
About an hour from Skardu, the lush Shigar Valley is a gateway toward the K2 basecamp trek and home to the beautifully restored 17th-century Shigar Fort, now a heritage hotel. Green fields, apricot orchards and old Balti architecture make it a peaceful stop.
8. Khaplu Valley and Palace
Further east, the green Khaplu Valley is one of Baltistan’s most scenic and calm destinations, crowned by the restored Khaplu Palace, a masterpiece of Balti-Tibetan architecture. It is the last major town before the remote Hushe region.
9. Kharpocho Fort
Perched on a hill above Skardu city, the historic Kharpocho Fort offers sweeping views over the town, the Indus River and the surrounding mountains. A short climb rewards you with one of the best vantage points in the valley.
10. Manthokha Waterfall

A short drive from the city, Sadpara Lake is a serene alpine lake surrounded by mountains and lies on the way toward Deosai. Its calm blue water makes it a lovely, easy spot to unwind.
Best time to visit Skardu
The best time to visit Skardu is from May to October. Summer, from June to September, brings warm days, open mountain passes and access to Deosai, while spring blossoms and autumn colours make May and October especially beautiful. Winter is stunning but cold, with snow closing many high routes.
How to reach Skardu
Skardu is reachable by a scenic flight from Islamabad to Skardu Airport, subject to weather, or by road along the Karakoram Highway and the Gilgit-Skardu Road — roughly a 20 to 24 hour drive from Islamabad. Once in Skardu, local jeeps and taxis connect you to the valleys and viewpoints.
